Prayer Rooms
3 entries
Main Airport Mosque
A proper mosque built within the airport with beautiful Ottoman-inspired architecture. Separate halls for men and women, each with capacity for several hundred.
Pro Tip
One of the most beautiful airport prayer spaces in the world. Worth visiting even outside prayer times.
Airside Prayer Rooms
Multiple smaller prayer rooms scattered throughout the departure gates. Clearly signposted with mosque symbols on airport maps.
Pro Tip
Check the airport app or info screens for the nearest one to your gate. Usually within 5 min walk.
Turkish Airlines Lounge Musalla
The famous Turkish Airlines business lounge has a dedicated prayer area. If you have lounge access, this is the most comfortable option.
Pro Tip
The lounge itself is worth seeing—free food, golf simulator, even a movie theater.

Turkish Airlines Lounge (Airside)
Widely considered the best airline lounge in the world. Free hot meals, Turkish specialties, pastries, and a cooking station. Open to all TK business class and Star Alliance Gold.
Pro Tip
Even if you don't have access, Priority Pass or a day pass is worth it for the food alone.
Kebap options (Airside)
Multiple Turkish kebab restaurants in the airport. Look for places serving Adana kebab, iskender, or lahmacun. All halal by default—Turkey is 99% Muslim.
Pro Tip
Airport prices are 2-3x city prices. If you're leaving the airport, eat in Sultanahmet instead.
Sultanahmet Koftecisi (City)
Since 1920. Arguably Istanbul's most famous kofte (meatball) restaurant. Simple menu, incredible quality. Right in the old city near the Blue Mosque.
Pro Tip
Only the original location matters—ignore the copycat branches. Look for "Tarihi" (historical) in the name.
Karakoy Gulluoglu (City)
The best baklava in Istanbul, possibly the world. A family operation since the 1800s. Get the pistachio baklava and Turkish tea.
Pro Tip
Buy a box to take on your flight. It keeps well and makes incredible crew gifts.
Street Food: Balik Ekmek
Grilled fish sandwich served on the Galata Bridge waterfront. A quintessential Istanbul experience. Fresh catch grilled on a boat, served with onions and lemon.
Pro Tip
Best at sunset. Combine with a walk across Galata Bridge and up to Galata Tower.

Mosque Etiquette
Istanbul's mosques are open to visitors but require proper dress. Remove shoes. Women should cover their heads (scarves provided at major mosques). Don't visit during prayer times unless praying.
Pro Tip
Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque are must-sees. Go early morning to avoid cruise ship crowds.
Bargaining Culture
Bargaining is expected at the Grand Bazaar and street markets. Start at 40-50% of the asking price and work your way up. Fixed prices at malls and restaurants.
Pro Tip
If a shop owner offers you tea, accept it. It's hospitality, not a sales trap (well, mostly).
Turkish Hospitality
Turks are famously hospitable. Accepting tea or coffee is a sign of respect. "Tesekkur ederim" (teh-shek-kur ed-er-im) means thank you and goes a long way.
Pro Tip
If invited to someone's home, bring a small gift. Pastries from a local bakery work perfectly.
Istanbulkart
Get an Istanbulkart transit card immediately. Works on metro, tram, bus, and ferries. Available at any metro station. Saves ~50% vs individual tickets.
Pro Tip
One card can be tapped for multiple passengers. Load at least 50 TL for a day of exploring.

Book at touristanbul.com or sign up at the transfer desk. Fills up fast—book before your flight.
4-Hour Layover: Sultanahmet Express
The Havaist bus goes straight from the airport to Sultanahmet (old city). See Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque exterior, grab a kofte, and head back. Tight but doable.
Pro Tip
Havaist bus is cheaper than taxi. ~75 min each way. Only do this with 4+ hour connection.
8-Hour Layover: Full Old City
Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, and baklava. A proper Istanbul highlight reel. End with tea at a rooftop cafe overlooking the Bosphorus.
Pro Tip
Start early. Hagia Sophia gets a massive queue by 10am. Buy tickets online.
Overnight: Bosphorus & Asian Side
Take the ferry from Eminonu to Kadikoy on the Asian side. Explore the food market, have dinner with a Bosphorus view, then hit Istiklal Avenue nightlife on the way back.
Pro Tip
The ferry ride itself is one of Istanbul's best experiences. ~25 min, incredible views.
